Gum disease can also complicate heart and kidney problems – which are common in people with diabetes – because bacteria in the mouth can easily spread into the bloodstream, where it can affect other areas of the body.

Just as the risk factors are similar, so are many of the management methods. Maintaining good blood-sugar levels doesn’t just control diabetes, it also helps lower the risks of gum disease. Likewise, adhering to a balanced diet of healthy foods is important in managing both diabetes and gum disease because it provides the nutrients the mouth and the whole body need to stay healthy and fend off infection.
